NGS - Black History Month

On February 23rd 2018 at 5-8pm NGS hosted a Black History Month Soirée, including a fashion show and a talent showcase.

The event took place at A.C.C.A. Community Center Banquet Hall. NGS members promoted and sold tickets through eventbrite, social media and in person. Selling approximately 200 tickets prior to the event and 100 tickets sold at the door. The art showcase included a variety of visual and performing artists. The show highlighted artists who painted several pieces, which were displayed throughout the hall. There was also a fashion show where local designers presented their streetwear and cultural designs. A dance group composed of young black youth from Toronto put on a great performance, which had the entire crowd up on their feet. The soirée included sentimental spoken words and poetry, which highlighted the struggle of slavery along with the emancipation of slaves.

Throughout the evening, appetizers and ethnic food was sold. Guests had the opportunity to taste food from various cultural backgrounds, including Jamaica, Congo, and Haiti. Overall, the Black History Month event was a success, and definitely one for the books.
